Summary
This project aims to equip and develop a community soccer programme run by local youths in Port au Prince, Haiti.

Project Needs and Beneficiaries
In the community where we're based, the local youths have little to do on the weekends and as a consequence have no positive way to deal with the stress of living in post-earthquake Port au Prince. They often find themselves in negative situations - gangs and "gangsterism" are constantly present and violence is common. As in U.S. cities, when young people lack positive outlets, the results can be devastating.

Activities
We've partnered with a local youth group called Rehabilitation to create a weekend soccer programme. The progamme aims to involve kids from across the community. Even those who don't play will be welcome to come cheer on their favourite team.

Potential Long Term Impact
This programme has the potential to keep at-risk youths in positive, constructive activities over the weekends. Rather than finding a sense of community in gangs, they can find it on a soccer team.

Project Message
We're trying to have something positive for the kids. There's so much negative around us - life is hard here. But this, this will be something positive. A way to empower our kids.

A few days ago we received a report that a lone male lion had injured one donkey and three cows and killed another cow in Mbirikani. All this from just two bomas. We followed his tracks on foot for 15 kilometers without any diversion or rest, eager to find out who this male lion was that had caused so much destruction.

After a while we came to a place called Nkoisuk where we were greeted by a strange sight – an ostrich that had been attacked, and even partially eaten, but was still alive. It seemed that the lion had jumped onto the back of the female ostrich and did not even care to break her neck. He fed on it until he was completely satisfied and continued on his journey as if nothing had happened, and all this while the ostrich was still alive! We were completely baffled by this behaviour. Here is the poor ostrich.

Live-ostrich-snack-(2)

The size of his tracks, his strategy while passing by human settlements, his choice of territory and the fact that he was alone all pointed to one individual – Lomunyak. We carried on following the tracks, until we found the spot he had been resting. It seemed he had run off from the place just a minute before, probably after hearing us approaching. Though we were unable to see him, I have no doubt in my mind that it was Lomunyak. He has been elusive for several months now, so we are very glad to find him again.

We offer opportunities in programs such as;

Education Program:
There are many primary & Secondary schools in Uganda that educate, house and feed needy children and orphans. You can teach primary classes, including academic subjects and life skills, and organize sport and art activities for the children. You are the outside world to these kids. Schools have a basic curriculum, but you’ll be planning your own lessons daily. Know that traditional education in Uganda is based on memorization and passing exams. While there is a language barrier, by volunteering you can introduce creative writing, drawing, debate, and life skills into the classroom.

This is a hands dirty type of program. Under this program, you can take part in construction and building projects in the rural/urban communities, working along side with unskilled youth/local people. Working on projects like ,construction of schools,orphanages, farming, volunteer centers, borehole building and also renovation work. You do not require experience it's just the enthusiasm of helping others.

We have projects that promote the voluntary spirit in Uganda. You would work alongside Ugandan volunteers (youth aged 17 – 27) in programs directly benefiting local communities all over Uganda.

Child Care Program:
In Uganda , there are thousands of children who are orphaned or neglected, and need love, care and attention.Care placements are ways to volunteer together as a family.Spend sometime working in an orphanage or care home, and be a hero to a child's life. By Working with children in orphanages, you would be helping the kids to learn life-skills,engaging them in activities such as sports & games or Music & arts. You'll likely get involved in the day to day running of an orphanage by feeding, washing and dressing the children.

Are you an individual, family or group planning on a volunteer travel, holiday or adventure abroad in Africa, then HB Volunteer Uganda is the answer,
We offer opportunities in programs such as;

Community Empowerment Program:
This is a hands dirty type of program. Under this program, you can take part in construction and building projects in the rural/urban communities, working along side with unskilled youth/local people. Working on projects like ,construction of schools,orphanages, farming, volunteer centers, borehole building and also renovation work. You do not require experience it's just the enthusiasm of helping others.

Youth work & Mentoring:
If you’re into something a little less structured that includes camping out and mentoring youth around the campfire, perhaps you’d like to work with a youth group. We have projects that promote the voluntary spirit in Uganda. You would work alongside Ugandan volunteers (youth aged 17 – 27) in programs directly benefiting local communities all over Uganda.

Expect to take part in an ever changing schedule made up of public speaking and mentoring youth and youth leaders fighting against HIV/AIDS,AIDS care, counseling, public health/hygiene,condom use/distribution, and creativity workshops promoting small business generation, the importance of basic education, women’s rights and empowerment.
