In the Khama village, there are a large number of youth who have never attended school. These youths have a talent for sports and games, especially football. We have established the VH-LAHA Football Club as a means to reach out to these youth.

This project aims to reduce the high percentage of youth who engage in risky behaviors such as commercial sex, drug abuse, etc. We want to help them identify and develop vocational skills leading to legitimate paid work while steering them away from illegal activity. We want to help these youth develop into responsible contributing members of our community who can independently support themselves. These youth engage in risky behaviors due to the lack skills leading to paid work and knowledge of ways in which they could earn money.

We are seeking ideas on how to grow this program and develop it further to achieve the outcomes we desire.

Youth Action Gathering

Paint Your Future- Creativity in Activism

What? The Sierra Youth Coalition Youth Action Gathering (YAG) will bring together youth, age 14-19 from across Atlantic Canada for 4 days of skill-building, workshops and fun. The theme of the YAG will be Paint Your Future - Creativity in Activism. The YAG will provide powerful training opportunities for high school students who would like to see their peers and schools foster a culture of sustainability and social justice. Participants will develop skills including communication and media, campaign organizing, direct action, growing food in the city and creative activism. Youth will learn about issues including water, renewable energy, fair trade, environmental racism, immigration injustices and climate refuges, food from production to consumption and more. And of course participants will have fun kayaking, making bags and clothes out of recycled material and making friends. Youth will get to develop an action plan that will outline the steps that they’ll take to develop awareness of an issue that interests them, motivate others to take action and have their voices heard. By coming together with youth from diverse backgrounds participants can share ideas, create visions and network to collaborate in their activist futures. By the end of the week, not only will participants have an action plan, but they’ll also come away with leadership skills, knowledge, friendships and an experience that will serve them as an activist, and as progressive members of their communities!

When? August 7-10, 4 days and 3 nights

Where? Micou’s Island, a beautiful tidal island in St. Margaret's Bay. To keep our carbon foot prints low we will be biking, then boating or swimming to the island.

For information you can contact Kaleigh at halifax.yag@syc-cjs.org.

Register online at syc-cjs.org/yag.

The cost is $50 or pay what you can. $20 of your registration fee will go towards your one year membership in the SYC family. A membership includes a 40% discount on VIA rail fares. Bursaries are available to cover transportation and registration costs.

The YAG is being hosted by the Sierra Youth Coalition in conjunction with GPI Atlantic. The Sierra Youth Coalition is an organization run by youth and for youth, serving as the youth arm of the Sierra Club of Canada. Through grassroots action, SYC aims to address unsustainable practices through a solutions based approach that promotes education for sustainability, bioregionalism, and sustainable communities.

Journey 4-H Youth Mentoring matches adult volunteers with court involved youth in Muskegon County. We partner with the 14th Judicial Court, Family Court Services and the Juvenile Detention Center to bring caring, committed mentors into the lives of our youth in an effort to reduce the frequency and severity of repeat offenses committed by the youth in our program. By being a positive role model to these young people, our mentors provide them with a link to the community, an opportunity to build new relationships and try new things.

Our newest program is The Outdoor Challenge, in which mentoring matches are able to develop life and leadership skills and grow their relationship by participating in exciting outdoor activities such as kayaking, rock climbing, orienteering, fishing, and lots more! We provide a fun, adventurous setting where matches can experience the outdoors together!

We require that all mentors complete 9 hours of training and ask for a commitment of 2 hrs/week for a minimum of one year. These guidelines ensure that both your mentee and you are able to fully experience and benefit from your time together.

While mentoring is a serious commitment, it is meant to be fun! Being a mentor requires not much more than a willingness to hang out with someone and do things that you both enjoy- go out to eat, play games, scrapbook, or explroe the outdoors. The possibilities are endless! Most of our mentors would agree, the adult often gets as much or more out of the relationship as the youth with whom they are matched.

The final date to apply for FSD’s Fall 2010 session in Uganda is August 1st. See below for information on 2010-2011 application instructions, deadlines, and program start dates.

About FSD in Masaka, Uganda
FSD interns and volunteers work toward youth development in a wide variety of subjects and programs geared toward opening doors for children to grow out of the poverty traps that afflict their families. Since Uganda instated Universal Primary Education (UPE) by removing primary school fees in 1996, enrollment has drastically increased, but many classrooms now have 200 students per room per teacher, which begs the question of the quality of education the students are receiving. Furthermore, there is still a large discrepancy in the education received by girls and boys. There are also a large number of orphaned children—usually due to HIV/AIDS—being cared for by other relatives, thus putting strain on the pocketbooks of extended family to support each child's learning and care. Although some bursaries exist for poor children, secondary school costs (i.e. books and stationary) remain an insurmountable hurdle for poor families who must already pay the opportunity cost of allowing their child to study rather than work. The result is that many children never receive secondary education and are therefore stuck in the poverty trap of basic labor.

To help address these issues, FSD’s programs promote collaboration to enhance the capacity of individuals and organizations to address these pressing health issues.

As an FSD Intern in Masaka, Uganda, you will…

  • Work side-by-side with a Community-Based Organization specializing in one more of the following development sectors: health, youth and education, women’s empowerment, microfinance, human rights, community development and/or environmental issues.

  • Receive intensive training in skills essential to sustainable development, such as: community asset mapping, needs assessments, collaborative project design, grant writing, and project monitoring and evaluation.

  • Gain grant writing and project management experience through designing and implementing a community-driven development project in partnership with your host organization.

  • Access the FSD Alumni Network upon your return home to connect with like-minded individuals who help one another to reach their academic and professional goals through networking and regional events. FSD Alumni have won internationally renowned scholarships, studied at prestigious graduate schools, worked for prominent international development organizations, and have even started their own grassroots organizations.

Recent Interns in Masaka, Uganda have…

  • Engaged youth in the creation of dance performances, theater, script writing, and choreography aimed at raising HIV/AIDS awareness and supporting HIV/AIDS-affected youth.

  • Facilitated workshops with local youth on reproductive health, effective communication, self-esteem building, and positive decision-making.

  • Provided medical treatment, care, and health education to orphans and vulnerable children (OVCs).

  • About FSD

Founded in 1995, the Foundation for Sustainable Development (FSD) supports the efforts of more than 300 grassroots, community-based partner organizations throughout Africa, Asia, and Latin America. FSD’s programs provide multi-faceted support that relies on active community participation to mobilize lasting solutions. FSD programs include:
