Purpose of Placement

To assist the organisation in managing and carrying out social research and rural development research projects.

Background

With a mandate to connect India through its villages, this organisation has created a rural network of local entrepreneurs that provide critical goods and services throughout rural India.

They are making a major impact on the development of rural communities in India by helping to alleviate poverty and the lack of access to basic resources and providing information and services through rural IT kiosks. The organisation and its entrepreneurs, using a franchise and partnership model to develop village kiosks, are bringing jobs, wealth creation, and much needed access to rural India.

The organisation is excellent in service delivery and in the six years it has been operating, has managed to create, sustain and grow a diverse ICT network across 5 Indian states. Through a low cost, direct delivery network, significant cost and time savings for villagers have been created, and an effective channel for enterprises to sell products and services has been provided. In addition to goods, the organisation works together with partners to deliver critical services like healthcare in a way that is sustainable, affordable and accessible.

The Nairobi metropolitan area is a dichotomy of affluence and poverty.

Several slum complexes exist at outskirts, the most prominent being Kibera, Mathare followed closely by Mukuru kwa Njenga.

Mukuru kwa Njenga has a population of about 50,000 residents, three quarters of whom live below the poverty line of less than a dollar a day (*Kenya National Bureau of Statistics 2009*).

Only about 2% of the
population has a university education. For every 10 girls who attend secondary school, about 4 will most likely drop out and discontinue with education. Most of these girls come from single parent

UNITED GLOBAL VOLUNTEERS INTL Is for this reason looking for teachers who can give right morals and mentor the kids in one of the schools in these slum-mukuru kwa njenga primary school. . It is under such justifying circumstances that many parents find it difficult to provide basic sanitation to the girl child of school going age especially in Upper primary and secondary school level. The local authorities’ statistical bureau provides further information that most single mothers are more likely than not to seek employment as commercial sex workers (*Kenya Demographic and Health Survey for 2009)

The idea behind this program was born out of the concerns of members who had witnessed the ever growing number of school aged girls going missing to attend classes because of various hygienic issues, abject poverty and lack of mentors,Consequently; they met informally coming up with various ideas on how to arrest this grave situation affecting children in the area which is currently a District and also a constituency in Kenya. It is worth noting that this area houses roughly over a one million residents many of whom live in informal settlements where issues of hygiene are wanting. UGVL Has intervened to bring trainers and mentors as well as social workers in aid to bring a well structured society through capacity building.
