We've created a unique chance for football fans who are travelling to South Africa during the World Cup to engage with local people and share their love of sports. This truly is a once in a lifetime opportunity. You'll coach football to kids from disadvantaged townships in Cape Town, live with like-minded volunteers and locals and of course go to any of the matches that you have tickets for.
No experience necessary – just bring enthusiasm, energy and a sense of fun – we’ll provide the rest.
What to do with a WAG? - volunteering opportunities in an orphanage or at a penguin sanctuary
For those travelling to South Africa during the World Cup who aren't interested in football coaching - (or football at all) we also have year round volunteering projects with a local orphanage, with a penguin sanctuary or teaching surfing to local township kids. You'll live with the football volunteers so this is the perfect option for a couple where one partner is football mad and the other isn't! Get in touch with us to discuss the type of volunteering you would like to do.
A typical day
Your mornings will be a relaxed time where you can head down to the beach for some surfing or take time out for yourself. After lunch you'll travel to your school where you'll meet up with the local kids for the football training sessions or you'll go to the beach to work with the children on the skate board sessions or surf school.
The location
You'll live in Muizenberg, a 20 min drive from Cape Town. It is a very well known, beautiful holiday destination on the shores of False Bay. The project base where you'll work is located in Capricorn which is approximately 20 mins walk from the lodge where you live.
See the World Cup
Obviously one of the most exciting opportunities is to go to see the World Cup Soccer matches or soak up the atmosphere in Cape Town over this football mad period. Cape Town is one of the main venues and will be hosting 8 matches, including at least one England game, a Quarter Final and Semi Final.
We will be running a shuttle bus service into Cape Town on match days
How you can make a difference
By volunteering with us you'll play your part in ongoing projects working with township children to build their confidence and develop their abilities. This is a great way to lay the foundations of hope in the children's lives by teaching them 3 exciting sports.
Not only do we develop the children's sporting skills through coaching but we also address their mental, emotional and spiritual needs through mentoring and life skills coaching. Many of the kids we work with have very little education or guidance on how to approach adult life and work.
What's included
A comprehensive information booklet
Travel advice and assistance
Being met on arrival at Capetown airport
Accommodation (shared room)
3 meals a day provided
Ongoing support, help and advice from our local team

RUN 4 MARTI
Thank you for visiting my fundraising page!
On June 6, 2010 I will be running in the San Diego Rock N Roll Marathon along with Michael Smoot, Adam Smoot and Tara. As most of you know my Mother (Marti Wollam) has been battling Melanoma Cancer for over a year. She is a strong woman and has and will continue to battle. As I watch both her and my Father fight this disease everyday, I ask myself what can I do? Well I thought using this event to raise money for the Melanoma Research Foundation would be a great idea! I hope that all of you can find a way to make a donation small or large. Their are millions of people suffering from this disease and with each donation we get closer to helping them all.
Donating through this website is simple, fast and totally secure. Many thanks for your support -- and don't forget to forward this to anyone who you think might want to donate too!

Here's the story:
After a couple years of not much exercise, I started running seriously again in the fall of 2008 to prepare for my first half marathon ever: The Disney Half Marathon on January 10, 2009. Since then, I've run three more half marathons, and a bunch of 5ks and 10ks. I tried out the Crim for the first time last summer and ran the Mackinac Island 8 Mile because, well, why not?
Now the 2010 racing season is upon us, and I wanted to try something a little different: running for a cause. My first long race of 2010 will be the Fifth Third River Bank 25k Run. 25k is A Really Long Way, or about 15.5 miles.
It didn't take long to think of a great (and relevant) cause. Over the next 59 days, I'd like to collect donations for the American Diabetes Association. My fiance, Jack, has Type 1 diabetes. Unfortunately, this means that even the most heroic efforts in diet and exercise will not cause his pancreas to become a fully functioning organ. Fortunately, though, organizations like the American Diabetes Association (http://diabetes.org) "funds research to prevent, cure, and manage diabetes" among a number of other great things. One day, I'm confident that they will find a cure.
My goal is to raise $150 dollars by May 8, 2010. Donations given through this page will go directly to the American Diabetes Association. I would like to invite my friends, family, and anyone else who stumbles upon this site to sponsor me for the Fifth Third River Bank Run. I will soon be kicking off the donations by pledging $1.00 per mile, because every small bit adds up.
At the end of all this, I hope to have reached my goal of donating $150 dollars to the American Diabetes Association. I also hope to finish my longest race to date successfully! My plans aren't set in stone, but I will try to wear a sweet shirt during the race to promote this cause.
Please check back over the next two months for any news items and updates!
Anna
We will bring you up to speed with what we have in place so far and help you get ramped up. You'll also be provided with knowledge about the organization, our goals for the fiscal year, and our history.
Some of the responsibilities may include brainstorming logistics; getting corporate sponsors; marketing and spreading the word about the event; selling tickets; investigating possible partnerships with other organizations.
Start date: Throughout the year with weekend starts
Duration 1 week - 6 months
Price:1 to 3 weeks £650 per week , 1 to 2 months £2250 per month, 3 to 6 months £1975 per month
Non divers £500 per week
During the week you will live on Hunting Caye which is a small island in the Sapodilla Cayes reef system - one of a number of marine reserves off the coast of Belize. Volunteers do daily conservation dives and reef check dives which contribute to an ongoing conservation project headed by the Belizean government. If you are there during the months of June to December you may also have the chance to work on the turtle conservation project.
All the work you will do directly contributes to the protection of the environment and to the wider scientific understanding of the reef systems.
A typical week
The main focus of the placement is to join in with the conservation projects through survey dives and coral reef check dives. By doing these you will help to develop an understanding of the complex ecosystem of the area in order to maximize conservation efforts and maintain the long term general health of the coral reef. You can do fun prebreakfast and night dives most days. Many divers also get the chance to swim with whale sharks during their time on Hunting Caye.
You will find yourself becoming part of the local community in Punta Gorda at the weekends when you return to the mainland. For example our dive centre sponsors a local football team and guests often watch the matches.
The Diving
Diving here is structured, but relaxed, and not regimented. There are no other dive boats in the area. There are opportunities to do a mix of fun dives, fantastic wall dives, reef check survey dives and commercial species dives. The surveys involve collecting data on coral, fish & invertebrates, which is submitted internationally to Reef Check headquarters for inclusion in global coral reef status reports, and locally to the Belizean Department of Fisheries. The current primary objective is for the Belizean Government to enforce preservation zones in the Sapodilla Cayes Marine Reserve.
Your survey dives will give you a fascinating insight into the reef system and develop your knowledge of the environment, identifying fish, coral and invertebrates. You can help in a variety of ways depending on how long you want to stay for and your diving ability. Even if you have never dived before, you can learn on the project and get PADI qualifications in the crystal clear waters of the Caribbean. Or you can assist with the surveys as a non-diver or snorkeller.
It is safe non challenging diving with visibility ranges from 15-40 metres and no strong currents. There are rarely other divers in the area and often new dive sites are discovered. The early morning and night recreational dives are a great way to begin or end your day. Along with the usual Caribbean reef life such as Spotted Eagle Rays, Groupers, Moray Eels, Hawksbill and Loggerhead Turtles and Dolphins you may be lucky enough to see giant Manta Rays and Whale Sharks.
The reef itself is very beautiful, covered with a wide range of soft and hard corals as well as numerous lovely songs and the giant barrel sponge. The night dives are fantastic with a huge amount of life. You can see lots of shrimps, octopus and free swimming moray eels, lobsters out of their holes, squid and crabs. During the full moon cycle you will get to the fantastic light show from the String of Pearls.
PADI Dive Courses
While on the island you can do your PADI Open Water, Advanced Diver, Rescue Diver, a variety of speciality dives, EFR first aid and you can also do your Divemaster course.
Open Water is included for free in the first week for those that do not have it
Advanced Diver 2 to 3 days £150
Rescue Diver 4 days £300
Emergency First Aid 1 day £150
Divemaster £750
The above prices do not include manuals and PADI fees.
Accommodation and lifestyle
During the week, you will stay on a small secluded Caribbean island, which has a large living area, a restaurant and bar as well as stunningly beautiful white sandy beaches. The island is an idyllic 5 acre coral caye, so if you've ever wanted to experience your own secluded Caribbean island this is it!! The accommodation is in a brand new building that was donated to the University of Belize for research and education purposes. The rooms are clean and comfortable, the building is run on solar power and all rooms have fans. The food is excellent with a mix of local and international dishes. We often eat fresh fish and seafood and vegetarians are catered for. At the weekend, you will leave the island and return to the mainland town of Punta Gorda, a chance for you to have some Internet catch up time and eat out. It is also a great chance to sample laid back Belizean village life or stay in a jungle lodge.
What else is there to do?
At the weekends you will stay in an apartment in Punta Gorda. There is a huge variety of things to do including exploring south Belize, visiting caves and waterfalls and staying in jungle lodges. Travelling the rivers by boat or canoe you can often spot howler monkeys swinging in the trees as well as a huge variety of bird life including the Montezuma bird, toucans and parrots.
If you wish you can spend your weekends at the Cotton Tree Lodge where you stay in amazing cabanas by the Moho River in the heart of the jungle. Or you can stay at the charming Hickatee Cottages in a jungle setting just outside Punta Gorda.
Alternatively you can explore further a field and travel to Livingstone, Guatemala and visit the gorgeous Rio Dulce where you can stay in beautiful jungle lodges. You can also visit neighbouring Mexico or Honduras.
What our volunteers say

The annual Wolf Day celebration which celebrates the rare Ethiopian wolf and its afroalpine habitat took place on Sunday 7th March in Dinsho, Ethiopia, a key area of the Ethiopian Wildlife Conservation Programme’s efforts.
Anne-Marie Stewart, Field Director of EWCP reports on the day:
Fun and games (and no rain) at the 12th annual Wolf Day in Dinsho.
On Sunday the 7th of March, we held our 12th Wolf Day in Dinsho, and all anyone could think about was, “Please let the rain hold off!”
For the past two weeks it hasn’t stopped raining here – the normally tranquil streams have turned into raging rivers that are in danger of breaking their banks, while the roads and dirt tracks in town are slippery mud slides that threaten to send you sliding headlong into a puddle. So understandably we were all concerned that Wolf Day could turn into a mud bath!
However, the weather, for once, was on our side, and although the rain clouds gathered ominously over the mountains, in Dinsho we were treated to patches of blue sky and sunshine.

A very soggy field © EWCP
The day opened with a blessing from the village elders, and then the Bale Beauty Nature Club presented us with a cake they had baked, marking the 12th Wolf Day for EWCP (the cake didn’t last very long, as the invited guests and dignitaries were keen to sample the best of Bale baking!).

Receiving the cake from Bale Beauty Nature Club © EWCP
Numerous sports matches were held during the day, with the EWCP Wolf team facing the Dinsho Club in the football finals. Unfortunately EWCP went down one-nil, but all the players did very well while having to deal with a horribly sodden pitch.

Penalty shootout © EWCP
Two volleyball matches, the final of the primary school football league, and the 5000m race concluded the sporting part of the day. We were also treated to various plays and singing competitions, as well as an art display from the Dinsho Primary School. A pot-smashing game and a raffle brought the proceedings for the day to a close, and all the EWCP staff breathed a sigh of relief.

Drama on Wolf Day © EWCP
Another successful Wolf Day, the rain stayed away, and the community came together once again to celebrate the Ethiopian wolf and the afroalpine. A big thank you to all the EWCP staff who ensured that the day ran smoothly.
The Ethiopian wolf is the most endangered canid in the world, and Africa’s most endangered carnivore. Less than 450 Ethiopian wolves survive today, in seven isolated populations in the Highlands of Ethiopia. There are no captive wolves anywhere in the world.
The aim of Wolf Day is to celebrate the Ethiopian wolf and its afroalpine habitat through games, sports matches and entertainment. One of the area’s largest public events in the area, Wolf Day brings communities and conservationists together to highlight the importance of biodiversity in Bale and the importance of rabies vaccinations to conserve Ethiopian wolves.
Born Free is entering its 15th year of support for the Ethiopian Wolf Conservation Programme (EWCP) which has worked to protect this amazing, rare animal since 1995.
You can help ensure the survival of the Ethiopian wolf!
Every contribution made to EWCP through Born Free goes towards running the programme in Ethiopia. You can help EWCP continue their domestic dog vaccinations to stop the spread of diseases to the wolves – these vaccinations have also shown positive results in preventing rabies in the human population too. Your donation will also allow expansion of the education programme, visiting more schools and villages to increase their understanding about wolf conservation and the need for Afroalpine protection.
Or you can adopt the Sodata Ethiopian wolf pack here!

Ucal McKenzie wasn't famous, but he was an athlete. He wasn't a wealthy NFL or NBA superstar with shoe deals and corporate sponsorships -- he was an unpaid club soccer player. Yet he shared an unfortunate common bond with more well known athletes such as Gaines Adams, Korey Stringer, Reggie Lewis and Hank Gathers: he died suddenly, unexpectedly of heart failure while playing the game he loved. And did so, coincidentally, not far from the court where fellow Boston resident Lewis passed away.
But what could have been another all too familiar story of a young man dying too soon, and a young widow coping in the aftermath, has become a story of inspiration and education for an entire community. Because not only was Ucal an accomplished soccer player, he was also a highly dedicated, respected coach, guidance counselor and mentor to countless young people in the Boston area, who gave endlessly, tirelessly to others.
So in the wake of his untimely passing, his widow, Suzanne, both to come to terms with his death and honor his life, founded the Ucal McKenzie Breakaway Foundation. Its motto, "For soccer, for life" says it all. Because not only does The Breakaway Foundation run youth soccer clinics in and around Boston with the help of corporate sponsors such as Nike and the New England Revolution, and the selfless time and effort of volunteers -- not just Ucal's friends and loved ones, but perfect stangers who were inspired by what he stood for and how he lived his life.
Yes, this is a sports story. Aside from his family and friends, there was nothing Ucal, a native of Jamaica, loved more than soccer, and sports have always had the power to unite and galvanize entire communities. But it's also a much larger story of how one incredible young man, thanks to how he lived his life off the field, inspired people of all ages, races and social backgrounds to be better citizens, friends and neighbors, and how, after his death, he's still inspiring people to achieve their goals and empowering them through the foundation's health programs such as CPR and defibrillator training and distribution, and nutrition initiatives.

Can you spare $5 or $10 for a great cause? I’m collecting pledges from family and friends who want to support the more than 22,000 athletes of Special Olympics Illinois! My sister, Katelyn, is one of those athletes. She competes year round in gymnastics, volleyball, basketball, and track. My family has been involved with Special Olympics since Katelyn was 8. We really enjoy attending the competitions and events. I have met so many awesome people. Recently, I started as a volunteer with the NWSRA Gymnastics Team. We train every Saturday morning...no more sleeping in for me!
I’m going to join over 3,600 people statewide who will voluntarily jump into freezing cold water in the middle of winter as we take part in the Law Enforcement Torch Run Polar Plunges for Special Olympics Illinois. We are crazy!!!!
Please help me reach my goal. Donating through this site is simple, fast and totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to make a contribution to the LETR Polar Plunge for Special Olympics Illinois.

By increasing awareness and involvement, this project hopes to decrease our impacts on coral reefs and provide solutions to protecting and restoring the reefs around Koh Tao. The project is lead by a small and friendly dive school (run by a British diver) that is dedicated to the protection of the local environment. It is active on two fronts, surveying the reefs and collecting data, and implementing a range of local environmental initiatives. There are a number of different eco projects underway including: building and maintaining a coral nursery (bio-rock); beach clean ups; land development (tree planting, land cleaning etc); an educational programme with the local school; newsletter and website development. The projects vary by season and depending on the needs and resources at the time.
Koh Tao is a beautiful and fun island in the Gulf of Thailand, now one of the world’s top dive locations. The island of Koh Tao (population 5,000) is a dramatic mix of dense jungle and hilly terrain in its interior and granite outcrops and beaches along the coast.
Koh Tao is surrounded by an excellent range of dive sites, all within a 40-minute boat ride, where you will discover a mix of hard and soft corals and abundant marine life. The sites vary in depth from just a few metres down to 40 metres, there is little current and the water temperature is always warm, ranging from about 27°C to 31°C. There will be plenty of time to relax and when you are not diving you can explore the island, visit one of the beaches, take a hike up to one of the mountain viewpoints or just relax!
a day in a life of a volunteer
Depending on your current dive level (if any) you will start off by taking the PADI Open Water or Advanced course, before taking part in the conservation work itself. For the conservation project, you will receive a mix of classroom lectures and practical training and will have the opportunity to participate in a range of activities.
You will learn how to perform underwater reef surveys and then help with data collection. This will give you to opportunity to gain knowledge about coral reefs and their inhabitants and you will learn how to identify different fish species and types of coral. You will gain experience working with equipment underwater and also develop your buoyancy and navigation skills.
As well as the data collection, you will have the chance to participate in some of the other projects including transplanting corals onto an artificial reef structure (bio-rock) and local clean-up activities.
Placements include a detailed information booklet, travel assistance, being met on arrival, accommodation, PADI dive training, equipment, expert instructors, conservation training and support from dive school staff.

Support the Special Olympics!!
Apoye los juegos Olimpicos Especiales!!
Hello and thank you for visiting my Polar Plunge fundraising page on behalf of the Illinois Special Olympics. The Special Olympics movement got its start 20, July 1968, when the first International Olympic Games were held at Soldier Field, Chicago Illinois. The first concept of the games were born in 1962 when Eunice Kennedy Shriver started a daycamp for persons with intellectual disabilities at her home.
They say anyone with a little guts and a warm heart can take the Plunge, well I've come all the way from sunny Southern California to Galesburg to take it!
You too can help the athletes by helping me reach my goal of raising $500.00.
I’m collecting pledges from family, friends, co-workers and anyone else who wants to help support the more than 22,000 athletes of Special Olympics Illinois! Summary
This project provides over 40 of Portland's immigrant children, often refugees from Sudan, Afghanistan and Somalia, with safe, supervised, healthful play facilitated by native-speaking teen mentors.
Project Needs and Beneficiaries
This project will address issues of diversity, inclusion, obesity, and early pregnancy within an unserved community in Portland, Oregon by offering extended supervision, sports mentoring, games, crafts and lunch to children of the Muslim faith. "When you've got a high percentage of single working parents, it doesn't take rocket science to realize that you need summer programs for kids. We bring kids in and give them a high dose of self-esteem." - Charles Jordan, former Director, PP&R
Activities
By providing immigrant youth with culturally relevant parks programs, the kids engage in inclusive activities such as swimming, basketball, crafts and other outdoor programs, when they may otherwise be inactive and unsupervised.
Potential Long Term Impact
This program supports 3,000 child visits per year, improving fitness, bridging cultural divides, addressing diverse needs and creating structured activities as an alternative for underserved children in communities with limited resources.
Project Message
"If it weren't for this program, I don’t know where my kids would be. I can't afford childcare. "

To reward your generosity, I’m going to join over 3,600 people statewide who will voluntarily jump into freezing cold water in the middle of winter as we take part in the Law Enforcement Torch Run Polar Plunges for Special Olympics Illinois.
Donating through this site is simple, fast and totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to make a contribution to the LETR Polar Plunge for Special Olympics Illinois.
Many thanks for your support – and don't forget to forward this to anyone who you think might want to donate too!
