The final application deadline for fall, 2010 programs is September 1st. Applications received after this date will be placed on a wait list and accepted on a case by case basis. Early applications receive priority. Apply Today.

See below for 2010-2011 application instructions and program start dates.

Our Year Our Voice: FSD and the International Year of Youth

Today, youth represent 18% of the global population or 1.2 billion people. 87% of youth live in developing countries, facing challenges brought about by limited access to healthcare, education, employment, and economic opportunities. Struggling families often need their children to produce immediate income and the subsequent denial of education creates a vicious poverty trap. Recognizing the importance of providing young people with academic and vocational tools that allow them to be contributing members of their societies, FSD partners with community-based organizations (CBOs) in Africa, Asia, and Latin America to provide an array of services to youth and their families.

In commemoration of the International Year of Youth, we at FSD hope you take a moment to consider the value of young peoples’ energy, imagination and initiatives, and recognize youth action as a crucial component in enhancing peace and development around the world. As an FSD Intern/Volunteer you have the opportunity to advocate for Youth and implement projects such as…

Vocational Skills Building for Youth in Masaka, Uganda | August 2010

Quick Fact: Listed by the World Health Organization (WHO) as the fourth highest global health risk, Indoor Air Pollution (IAP) kills 1.5 million people every year (more than malaria) and is responsible for over half of annual pneumonia deaths.

The kitchen at Kyabakuza Primary School (KPS) sits in a small room that lacks ventilation. With five stoves burning each day, the smoke quickly fills the kitchen air and creeps into neighboring classrooms. The indoor air pollution at KPS puts the cook and her children, as well as the teachers and students at grave risk for acute respiratory, cardiovascular and ocular diseases. Furthermore, the kitchen occupies a room that KPS could utilize for much needed classroom space.

In response, FSD funded an after-school program that teaches students at KPS practical, hands-on skills. The program’s first project is building a new school kitchen with proper ventilation and using locally sourced materials. Using cassava flour, a cheaper and equally durable alternative to cement, the students will learn cassava construction techniques. KPS is already planning the next project –a school garden that will grow vegetables to provide more nutrient rich meals for students and teachers.

This project exemplifies the types of projects FSD supports–it is locally driven, economically and regionally viable, and environmentally sustainable. Moreover, Kyabakuza Primary School serves as an example for surrounding schools, as they can learn from and easily replicate this project.

Check out other projects FSD interns are currently involved with here: http://fsdinternational.org/opportunities

As an FSD Intern you will…
  • Work side-by-side with a Community-Based Organization specializing in one more of the following development sectors: health, youth and education, women’s empowerment, microfinance, human rights, community development and/or environmental issues.

  • Receive intensive training in skills essential to sustainable development, such as: community asset mapping, needs assessments, collaborative project design, grant writing, and project monitoring and evaluation.

  • Gain grant writing and project management experience through designing and implementing a community-driven development project in partnership with your host organization.

  • Access the FSD Alumni Network upon your return home to connect with like-minded individuals who help one another to reach their academic and professional goals through networking and regional events. FSD Alumni have won internationally renowned scholarships, studied at prestigious graduate schools, worked for prominent international development organizations, and have even started their own grassroots organizations.

Summary
Kito International has a simple philosophy: give street youth an economic opportunity and THEY will WORK their way off the streets and out of poverty.

Project Needs and Beneficiaries
Imagine the entire population of Russia relocated to live and work on the streets of every other inhabited continent. This is how extreme the problem is for the over 150 million street children worldwide. Found in every major city of the world, street youth face a life of poverty, abuse, disease and exploitation. While thousands of programs offer street youth food, clothing and shelter, organizations struggle to provide a long-term "exit strategy," or a path off the streets and out of poverty.

Activities
We refocus the survival skills and natural resourcefulness of street youth to create a lifetime of economic independence. We offer intensive skills training, employment at a Kito core business, and the opportunity to micro-franchise our businesses.

Potential Long Term Impact
Providing economic opportunities for the short-term and skills for the long-term, Kito enables youth to become self-sufficient and move off the streets forever. When street youth get a chance, they build a future for themselves and their families.

Project Message
"I have a renewed hope and feel encouraged to build a better future for my son."

Summary
This project will provide DC youth recently released from prison with monthly workshops that foster new support systems, job skills, and the tools and confidence to follow a positive life path.

Project Needs and Beneficiaries
Free Minds has served over 350 youth incarcerated as adults in the DC Jail. These young men often return to the community eager for a fresh start, but are held back by the lack of a positive support system. Having spent their adolescence behind bars, their experience as returning citizens is marked by an absence of opportunity. Youth coming home need to practice social skills, create bonds with others, and learn the tools to make positive choices, but these options are rarely offered.

Activities
Through frequent and regular outings and workshops on activities ranging from financial readiness and career goals to hip-hop sonnet classes and outdoor team-building, Free Minds empowers youth to restructure the foundation of their lives.

Potential Long Term Impact
We will nurture and sustain the trusting relationships developed in book club at the DC Jail to instill in youth the confidence needed to pursue employment and education, resulting in lower recidivism rates, stronger families, and safer communities.

Project Message
When I came home, doing activities with Free Minds taught me how I can benefit from new experiences. Now I can be successful on probation and in life.

Summary
This project is an informal academic program that supports refugee youth in achieving grade level
performance in school through one-on-one adolescent literacy tutoring with a college tutor.

Project Needs and Beneficiaries
Most of the youth served by the program received their elementary schooling in refugee camps. For all of these youth, English is their second language. As a combined result of limited language proficiency, lack of prior formal schooling, and low literacy levels within the adult population, these youth are unprepared for the structure and content rigor of the traditional American high school.

Activities
The program provides participants with proven strategies for school success, as well as opportunities to apply their new skills and competencies to furthering the goals of their community through community service.

Potential Long Term Impact
This program provides a structured opportunity for teens to improve their grades in school, as well as to prepare them for a new culture and social world, while remaining connected to their communities of origin.
